Update on the ODFW 2024 Monitoring Report on the Upper Deschutes
If you are interested in the fishery health of the Upper Deschutes below Wickiup Dam, here is the most recent (2024) monitoring report from ODFW. The report’s Executive Summary points out that fish health and populations are in reasonable shape. The report itself details the specific monitoring protocols and results. As we all know, seasonal flow fluctuations out of the dam have a severe impact on the Upper D’s fisheries and habitat. This report will provide an important benchmark for comparison when winter flows are increased. As mandated in the 2020 Deschutes Basin Habitat Conservation Plan, the current winter flows of 100 cfs will increase to 300 cfs by the end of 2028.
Deschutes TU Board Members Teach Kids to Cast @ NatureConnect Event in Bend
No rivers run through Alpenglow Park but on a Saturday in late September over 50 aspiring fly anglers got a taste of the old “10 & 2” rhythm. Deschutes Redbands Chapter board members spent the day introducing kids from 5 – 12 years old (plus their curious parents) to flicking a fly.
It was a great time! We hope that getting their hands on a fly rod for the first time may translate into a lifelong passion for enjoying and protecting the Deschutes and its tributaries.
Congrats to Park, who was there with his grandmother, as the lucky winner of his very own fly rod, reel and line.
We’ll see all these kids on the river!!!!
